about

I've rewritten this passage about five times now, trying to figure out the right way to say what I want to say about this album. This is a project about my own cultural dissonance told through the story of the cold war and the USA/USSR conflict. The name of this album has kinda sorta two meanings, kinda sorta one meaning. Let's call it one and a half meanings. It's about trying to do the impossible, or at least what feels impossible. I grew up in America, however I was raised in a Russian home, ate Russian food, spoke the Russian language, watched Russian cartoons etc. Trying to navigate American culture as I was essentially a Russian child felt like doing the impossible, with two opposing cultures trying to outpower one-another. The same thing happened between these two countries during the cold war era, and I think this was best reflected in the space race. Both countries were trying to outdo each other technologically, and in a more literal sense were running to a place before the moon and past the stars. To do the impossible was to win. To win was to do the impossible. There aren't any winners in this kind of strange quiet cultural battle, the acceptance of the existence of both cultures and moving on with life, either internally or externally, is seemingly the only way to overcome this hill. But I don't know, this isn't meant to be political or anything. I guess I'm just trying to say it was hard to make friends when you don't even speak the same language, that's all.
